MENTAL ACUITY & RED LIGHT THERAPY
The term 'mental acuity' refers to your sharpness of vision and hearing, as well as the quickness of thought processing.
Unfortunately, as you get older your mental acuity can decrease, but...
that does not mean there isn't anything you can do about it!
In this blog, you'll learn how red light therapy can be used to improve your mental acuity.
The four functions of mental acuity:
Your brain functions as a result of 4 different components, namely:
Attention – how well we are able to focus on a given task
Memory – how well we are able to retain information and recall memories
Situational judgement – how we respond to certain stimuli and situations that require an action or decision to be made
Information processing – how well we are able to process information from all of the senses.
While these 4 functions do have a complicated interaction with each other, they are completely related to each other.
This means that if you can improve one of these functions, chances are you will have an overall increase in mental acuity.
So how can you improve these functions?
Light's interaction with your brain
Red and near-infrared light is absorbed between 4 mm and 2 inches into your body.
This means that your red light therapy device is able to penetrate through the skull, and readily be absorbed and utilised by your brain tissues.
The type of light emitted from a red light therapy device is also perfect for increasing the mitochondrial function within your brain cells
This means increased energy in your brain = higher performance by all your brain cells = increased mental acuity!
Is there evidence?
A study performed in 2021 by Nizamutdinov et al. investigated the effect of red light therapy on cognitive functioning in adults that suffer from mild to moderate Alzheimer’s Disease.
Researchers found that daily treatments (6-minutes per day) for 8-weeks led to significant improvements in:
Logical memory tests
Trial making tests
Naming tests
Auditory verbal learning tests
Sleep quality
Caregivers also noted patients had less anxiety, improved moods, more energy, and positive daily routine changes.
The researchers concluded that red light therapy can successfully and safely improve cognitive functioning in patients suffering from dementia and Alzheimer’s Disease.

In closing:
In order to obtain the best results from your red light therapy device, you should be doing daily sessions with a home device.
This should also be supported with other lifestyle factors such as nutrition, exercise, and sleep.
